LAZY SUNDAY AFTERNOON IN MONTGAT

One of our missions this summer is to explore beaches outside of Barcelona. This time, we did not go far away from home: Montgat is still in zone 1, so only a euro metro/train ticket away. Perfect for a lazy Sunday afternoon at the beach.

It was a bit more crowded then we hoped, but it wasn’t Barceloneta either. There were a few nice bars and chiringuitos around, perfect for a tapa and a cold beer on the beach. But we felt like having a nice dinner somewhere, so we went out to look for a restaurant. This turned out to be quite a challenge, as most restaurants were closed around there on Sundays (again Spain, why?).

While looking around, we climbed up a little hill with a nice view over the beach and the town. Further away, you could even see silhouettes of Torre Agbar , the W hotel and the Sagrada Família.

Nope, we still don’t have a cat… But we can’t stop talking about getting one either!

So, back to finding a restaurant. After walking around for an hour, only walking by closed restaurants, we lost hope and were about to head back home. Luckily, right before leaving, we had the genius idea to go to Malamar, which is right at the train station.

Malamar is a Wakepark in Montgat. I was lucky to go there a couple of weeks ago with my colleagues for a team building event. We did paddle surf and wakeboarding, two sports I really sucked at but it was a lot of fun. The place looks like a dream, a little hidden paradise at the sea.

We didn’t go wakeboarding, of course. The reason we went to Malamar is because they also have a nice restaurant right at the sea. We went for patatas bravas (and free olives, bread and sweet potato chips!) and a good paella de marisco. They used a huge pan for just the two of us, and put a third plate with leftover paella on the side. So much food…. But so good!

We were thinking about getting a drink afterwards, but then decided not to spend too much money and go home. But it was our lucky day, because right when were about to leave, they said the magic words: “You want cava? Is for free!”. We went to take a look upstairs at the roof terrace. It was perfect. A cold class of cava in our hands, perfect temperature, wide open view over the sea, the city far away, the mountains… It felt like we were on holidays!

Pure holiday feelings… that’s exactly why we moved here! Hope you enjoyed this overload of pictures!

How to get to Montgat:
To go to Montgat by train, you take the R1 direction Maçanet – Massanes. It leaves from Sants, Plaça Catalunya, Arc de Triomf and Clot (see this map for other stops). There are two stops in Montgat: Montgat and Montgat Nord. We took Montgat Nord which is right at the beach, and Montgat to go back home (which is at Malamar). The two stations are within walking distance from each other. You can use the T10 metro ticket for this train.
