La Tasqueta de
Blai is always packed, no matter what time you arrive. Even at four in the
afternoon, which is after lunch and far before dinner time (even for the Dutch),
you have to fight for one of the few tables or a seat at the bar. The main
reason for its popularity: 1 euro pintxos. And they are good!
Pintxos are small
snacks, like tapas, that consist of pieces of bread with different toppings, “pinned”
on the bread with a toothpick. This bar has plenty of choice: cheese, meat and
seafood, as well as several vegetarian options. They are all richly topped with
fresh ingredients, dressing drizzled over, some being so large it is hard to
eat them without cutlery. And they are just delicious! There are also sweet
ones for desert, like profiteroles with chocolate sauce – obviously no bread
underneath these. I only had a few, since they are quite filling, but I already
have some favorites: the one with smoked salmon and the mini wrap with meat and
guacamole. There are still so many to try, like the breakfast pintxo with a
little chorizo and a mini fried egg on top, or the stuffed pepper, or anything
with goat cheese.
The concept is
simple: take a plate, fill it up with pintxos of your choice and enjoy! If you
still want more (because the rolled one with ham also looks good…), go ahead,
just throw it on. In the end, they will count the sticks for the bill, one you won’t
have to be afraid of: you’ll really have to eat or drink a LOT to make it over
15 euros.
The place is
quite small and it can be a little tight when it’s completely full (which it is
usually). You’ll be very lucky to get a table, so don’t hesitate to jump at it
once one gets free. You can expect a mix of people, mostly locals, as it’s not at
a very central location and hidden in a side street, but also some tourists,
young and old.
This is a great
place to come at any time, to enjoy a couple of pintxos as a late afternoon
lunch, dinner, or nightly snack, and a perfect place to have a good time with
friends.
